Running bananana in Docker
The brain and the agent as containers: Docker, Unraid, TrueNAS and Synology. Install, update, back up and remove.
Both halves of bananana.dev come as Docker images, for amd64 and arm64 (Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 too). Neither opens a port: they connect out to the encrypted relay, and you reach the brain at your-name.bananana.dev.
| Image | What it is | |
|---|---|---|
| The brain | romanvaxman/bananana-brain | Your dashboard, alerts, automations and history. One per company. |
| The agent | romanvaxman/bananana-node | Connects the machine it runs on to a brain. For NAS systems without a normal service manager; other Linux machines use the one-line installer. |
The brain
Create a free account at bananana.dev/start and copy the setup token it shows (it starts with bst_). It's only used on the first start. Then pick your system:
Docker or Docker Compose
docker run -d --name bananana --restart unless-stopped -v bananana:/data -e BANANANA_SETUP_TOKEN=bst_… romanvaxman/bananana-brain
Prefer Compose? Use this compose file: put the token in BANANANA_SETUP_TOKEN and run docker compose up -d. docker logs bananana shows your brain's address once it's connected.
Unraid
In Apps, search for bananana and install bananana-brain. Paste the token into Setup token. Its data goes to /mnt/user/appdata/bananana-brain.
TrueNAS SCALE
Install it as a custom app: in Apps › Discover Apps, choose Install via YAML from the ⋮ menu, and paste the compose file above with your token in it. bananana brain has also been submitted to the TrueNAS community catalog; once it's listed you can install it from Apps by name.
Synology and QNAP
In Container Manager (Synology) or Container Station (QNAP), create a project from the compose file above.
Updating: a brain in Docker updates when you pull the new image: docker pull romanvaxman/bananana-brain, then remove and start the container again with the same volume (with Compose: docker compose pull && docker compose up -d; Unraid shows an update button). Your data stays in the volume.
The agent
On your brain, open Nodes › Add node, choose Install command, pick Docker as the system and press Create install command. You get a docker run … line with a one-use code in it. Details and what the container can do: Adding computers.
Unraid
In Apps, install bananana-node and paste the code (it starts with bnn-) into Code. Or paste the docker run line into Unraid's terminal.
TrueNAS SCALE, Synology and other Compose systems
Use the agent's compose file with the code in BANANANA_NODE_TOKEN, as a Custom App on TrueNAS or a project in Container Manager. The agent needs the host's processes, network and name (privileged, pid: host, network_mode: host, uts: host), because it reports and manages the machine itself, not just its own container.
The agent updates itself like any other node. Commands at the machine go through Docker, for example docker exec bananana-node bananana-node status.
Removing them
Brain: docker rm -f bananana, and docker volume rm bananana only if you also want to delete its data. Agent: docker rm -f bananana-node && docker volume rm bananana-node, then remove the device on the Nodes page.
