Questions people ask

Cost, privacy, what we can see, what happens if the internet or the relay is down, which systems are supported, and more.

What does bananana.dev cost?

The brain software is free: one brain per company, on your own server. The iPhone and Android apps are a one-time purchase. The AI assistant uses your own AI account or plan, so you pay your provider directly, or nothing with a model on your own hardware.

Can you (CTF Designs) see our computers or data?

Your data lives on your brain, and everything between the brain and your computers is end-to-end encrypted through the relay, which can't read it. We never have an account on your dashboard. One honest exception: when you open your brain at its name.bananana.dev address, your browser's pages pass through the relay encrypted in transit but not end to end, so the relay could in principle see them, like any proxy. We don't store or look at them. Details: How bananana.dev keeps things safe.

What if the relay is down?

Remote access, readings from nodes and onboarding pause until it's back, and everything reconnects by itself. Your brain keeps working, and so does anything running on the computers themselves.

What if our internet is down?

Nodes can't reach the brain until it's back (they connect through the relay, on the internet). Work queued for them waits and runs when they reconnect.

Which systems are supported?

Windows 10 and 11 (and Windows Server), macOS on Intel and Apple silicon, and Linux on 64-bit Intel/AMD and ARM, including Raspberry Pi. Some features are Windows-first: Defender and firewall management, and most compliance checks. Screen control on Linux needs X11.

Do we need a VPN, open ports or a fixed IP address?

No. Everything connects out over normal HTTPS.

Will people know when IT is looking at their screen?

Yes. The bananana.dev icon by their clock changes whenever someone has their screen or terminal open, and says who. Every session is in the audit log.

Can bananana.dev wipe a computer?

Not yet. It's planned for company devices only, needing the Owner role and optionally a second person's approval.

Does it work with Microsoft 365, Intune or Group Policy?

Alongside them, yes. Deploy the agent with Intune or Group Policy using a deployment key. bananana.dev reads what policies set, and shows "Blocked by Group Policy" instead of fighting them.

Can I use it for personal computers?

Mark a device's ownership as Personal on its Device tab. Fuller support for personal devices (with clear limits on what IT can see) is planned.

What about iPhones, iPads and Macs through Apple's device management?

Coming: enrolment through Apple's MDM is waiting on Apple's approval. Macs already work with the agent.

Can I run the brain in Docker or on a Raspberry Pi?

Docker and Raspberry Pi editions of the brain are planned.

How do I remove bananana.dev from a computer?

Press Remove on its page, then on the computer run bananana-node uninstall --purge as administrator: The agent and the tray icon.

How do I remove the brain?

Remove its computers first (above). Then, on the brain's machine:
